please stop making fun of:
- people's faces or facial expressions
- people's educations
- people's "intelligence"
- people's speech
- people's bodies or body parts

even if the person you're making fun of is a bad person, you no doubt have friends or will have friends for whom those things are true, and who are worried you think the same things about you.

want to make fun of a lib or a fascist? try this instead:
- make fun of them for being a lib or fascist
- highlight ways they obviously don't believe their own ideology
- throw a dairy-free milkshake on them

i know this post is formatted like a bit of a joke, but seriously stop doing this. i see this a lot even on masto, and from otherwise cool people who don't realize the ways that their memes can hurt people.

please watch out for this when you're making fun of people, and try to avoid boosting memes where you notice this /srs

@emi If you have to make fun of someone's person, it could be interpreted as you not finding anything to actually criticize in what they say or do.

@emi don't make fun of everything and live in a boring world lacking in humour

@emi Absolutely agree. What is our politics based if not a non-negotiable baseline respect for people? Not because they "deserve" it, but because they are people. Also I strongly believe that respect is contagious, so the most reliable way to get respect is to show respect.

#respect

@strypey @emi
There is no good reason to respect a climate science denier in 2022, but there is no good reason to ridicule them over:

- people's faces or facial expressions
- people's "intelligence"
- people's speech
- people's bodies or body parts

Ridicule climate science deniers and all evidence-free conspiracy theorists about their propensity to believe that they know better than the educated experts.

You can respect a person without necessarily respecting their opinion.

@emi

@strypey @emi
Anyone holding the opinion that climate science is a hoax deserves no respect.

@GreenFire
That unpleasant little flame war you just got yourself into, that's what you get when you don't show respect for people. Worse, it tends to make people less amenable to changing their opinion, so it's not just ineffective, it's counterproductive. Saying nothing to such people would be more likely to help with the goals of getting enough people to act on climate change in time to make a difference.

@emi

@emi ya I hate Biden with the fury of a thousand suns but I have a speech impediment too and I definitely think a little bit less of those who constantly use it to drag him
